My work "Pilgrim" will be among the works shown.

Fabric8 is pleased to present Spectrum, a juried group exhibition of works addressing color.

The pieces in Spectrum were chosen from 150 submissions, and feature artists Amandalynn, Ben Needham, David Ball, David Garvey, Geoff Campen, Jessica Eastburn, Ken Keirns, Mike Kimball, and St. Monci.

Exploring the spectrum of color as well as a spectrum of subject matter – from geometry and texture to illustration and portraiture – the show covers the breadth of fabric8's program while also featuring artists that haven't shown there regularly. The jury consisted of several painters that the gallery works with frequently.

941 Geary is pleased to present The City We Love , a large-scale group exhibition of works from artists living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. The show is co-curated by Justin Giarla and local graffiti practitioner APEX, and features new work from artists actively engaged in San Francisco’s graffiti and street art culture.

The opening reception is on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 6-9 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through September 3.

Justin and APEX came together to organize this exhibition, with the shared motivation of wanting to show what’s going on right here, right now. The resulting exhibition is a modest sampling of what’s happening in the streets and studios of San Francisco, including work by locals APEX, Casey Gray, Chad Hasegawa, Chor Boogie, David Ball, D Young V, EZRA, Hugh Leeman, Jesse Hazelip, John Felix Arnold, Luke Todd, NEON, Silhouette, Teen Witch and Vogue. With backgrounds as diverse as their respective artistic styles, the collection of works featured by this group of artists are as entrenched in conversation with each other in the gallery space as they are in the streets. 941 Geary’s expansive space serves as an ideal backdrop to the work: bold, graphic, daring, surprising and as unique as the city itself.

Some friends and I just created and donated skate decks for the emerging non-profit called Skateistan. Skateistan is Afghanistan’s (and the world’s) first co-educational skateboarding school. The school engages growing numbers of urban and internally-displaced youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment programs. The students are selected from all of Afghanistan’s diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. They will develop skills in skateboarding, skateboarding instruction, healthy habits, civic responsibility, information technology, the arts, and languages. The students themselves decide what they want to learn; we connect them with teachers who will enable them to develop the skills that they consider important. Since Skateistan has been active in Kabul, we’ve seen that Afghan youth of all ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds love to skateboard. Skateistan brings them together, equipping young men and women to lead their communities toward social change and development.

2nd Annual Surrealist Salon

I recently was chosen to be the juror for the second annual Surrealist's Salon held at the NEA sponsored Baton Rouge Gallery.
Choosing work for the show was an enjoyable experience. In selecting the artwork for the exhibition, I primarily sought works created in the spirit of surrealism outlined by Andre Breton in the Surrealist Manifesto: "dictated by the thought, in absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concerns."

Additionally, I chose works that either spoke to some of the root threads of Surrealism or that in some way might add to the subconscious experience of the show itself; supporting a dialogue between the works as a whole, leaving the attendees free to consider not only the artist's subconscious but their own as well.

Long Ago... the other David

I just dug up some old pictures for class back when I was 22 and 23. I figured that I would post them as most people don't know this other side of me and I never had them up on a site.

This first set is based upon mylar distortions of a still life of my violin. This composition was then redrawn and altered based on found objects ( a rusty nail, pieces of glass, rotten wood and the view of wet leaves outside my window). I then took a dragonfly's eye kaleidoscope and set it at a fixed distance from my first drawing on a string. from that fixed viewpoint, I sketched the placement of the distorted elements into the new drawing.

The drawing to follow is based on studies of the way a fly's eye kaleidoscope breaks apart imagery drawn based on existing drawings viewed through the kaleidoscope. The image was inspired by a Lucky Strike advertisement where a doctor is recommending his preferred cigarettes. It was relevant at the time as I was quitting smoking. Liberties had been taken to allow for the representation on three additional, non-distorted constants: the landscape, the second landscape within the shirt and the superimposed face on the cigarette boxes. See this same fly's eye distortion revisited in the anamorphic piece at the bottom.

The other image here is a chrome cylinder anamorphosis. A reflective cylinder is placed on the drawing which is distorted to counteract the distortion of the cylinder. The equally distorted image reflects on the opposing distorted surface to make a reflection that appears "correct".

During the next year I started painting in oil and doing anamorphic work. I destroyed these as they were too big to keep traveling with. I'm less rash about such things these days. I also did because I am stupid like that. Both of the following are gone now but thankfully I had the foresight to photograph. These show what the work looks like from the side and when viewed from the fixed eye level for which they were made. This makes having an opening hard as most they are point specific, eye level specific and intended for monocular viewing.

Here are the pictures of one utilizing the fly's eye kaleidoscopic break-up superimposed anamorphic distortion onto nine connected three-dimensional pyramids.
